Els Pescadors
Plaça Prim 1 (93 225 20 18). Metro Poblenou.
Open 1-3.45pm, 8pm-midnight daily.
Els Pescadors encapsulates the best of modern and traditional
Barcelona; one dining room is beautifully old-fashioned,
with marble-topped tables, wooden chairs and dressers
decked with spirits; the other is sharp-edged, red and
steely grey. The dichotomy is reflected in the food,
where the emphasis is on superbly fresh, locally caught
fish, prepared using age-old methods, and given the
occasional twist.

3wks Aug.
Carles Gaig, to whose family this restaurant has belonged
for 130 years, believes that more than three elements
on a plate is too much. But, oh, what elements! From
the crayfish tempura amuse-gueule, served with a dip
of creamed leek salted with a piece of pancetta, through
to a shotglass holding layers of tangy lemon syrup,
crema catalana mousse, caramel ice-cream and topped
with burnt sugar (to be eaten by plunging the spoon
all the way down), every dish is as surprising and perfectly
composed as the last.
